There's a special kind of horror lurking in the shadows––not in haunted houses, but in homes and businesses, where well-intentioned (but disastrous) DIY electrical work has taken place. Welcome to Circuit of Horrors! Where we bring you real-life electrical crime scenes, as witnessed by our brave electricians.
Read on, if you dare...

This week's horror story is what we're calling The Ceiling Entrails Horror. Our electrician Mark was called out for what should have been a simple job—replacing a light fixture. Easy, right? Wrong. Upon arrival, Mark was met with a ceiling that looked like it had been through a horror movie massacre. Instead of neatly tucked-away wiring, there were electrical entrails dangling down like something straight out of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Someone had clearly been yanking on the wires from above, possibly thinking they could DIY their way through a rewiring job. Spoiler alert: They couldn’t.
💀 Lesson learned: Electrical wiring isn’t a party streamer—if it’s hanging out of your ceiling, something has gone very, very wrong. Call a professional before your house turns into the set of Final Destination.
We get it. There’s a certain pride that comes with DIY home projects. Maybe you watched a YouTube tutorial, or maybe your cousin’s friend’s uncle once did it, and you think, "How hard can it be?" Spoiler alert: very hard. Electrical work is not the place to test your DIY skills, and here’s why:
Shocking Risks – Messing with live wires without proper knowledge can result in electrical shocks or even electrocution. That’s not just a jump scare—that’s a real danger.
Fire Hazards – Incorrect wiring can cause overheating, sparking, and potential house fires. That “fishy” burning smell? That’s your home crying for help.
Code Violations & Insurance Issues – DIY electrical work often doesn’t meet safety regulations, meaning if something goes wrong, your home insurance may not cover the damage.
Bigger Repair Costs – A botched DIY job means you’ll still have to call in an electrician—only now it’s going to cost more because we have to undo the mess before fixing it properly.
How a Professional Fixes This DIY Disaster
Had the DIY-er in this case called a professional from the start, Mark would have been in and out in no time. Instead, he had to:
Assess the damage – Checking for any loose, burnt, or incorrectly connected wires.
Turn off the power & make the area safe – Because no one likes unexpected sparks… or electrocution.
Properly secure the wiring – Ensuring that all connections are safe, insulated, and up to code.
Reinstall the light fixture correctly – So it works without looking like a haunted house prop.
Test the system – Making sure everything is running safely and efficiently.
